Personality:
Much of what we learn of Diego outside of the titular race (the 'Steel Ball Run') is provided to us through two fallible sources. One of which is a subjective narrator, who provides details of Diego's past at times, but is otherwise uncertain of deeper details. The other is a fellow racer who has a particularly large rivalry with Diego, and is prone to focusing on his negative outward traits- possibly exaggerating them. This said there is much we can see of Diego within the race itself, and by reading deeper into what these two sources provide, further understanding of this man can be gained.
One fact that is undeniable is that Diego is a man who is driven by a single purpose, a focus that he has held with him since childhood. In spite of the circumstances he grew up in, Diego's mother provided a bright light in his young life- filling it with love, and caring. As such, when she died from something that Diego was convinced came due to wounds she suffered at other's cruel hands, he became driven to find a way to make people see him in a position of power and respect. His goal is to become someone others are forced to acknowledge and follow, and to him, this is the ultimate satisfaction of his revenge for the fate that his mother suffered.
He is a sharp man, who is readily shown noticing minor details that other people otherwise miss. This is added to later by the power of his Stand, but far from exclusive to its existence; he is not only capable of gathering information (such as where a person is in relation to himself, or what someone has specifically dropped over time), but also of using that information to his advantage- determining if someone should be coming around a corner behind him, or if an item he was watching for has failed to appear as it should have.
Despite this skill, Diego has one major stumbling block. He can become hyper-focused on a path or a short term goal, and in such fails to see things beyond them. Within his focus his perception is a great help, but for matters outside his focus he does not take the time or energy to consider things in the way he otherwise would. This leaves him open to missing opportunities he would have otherwise taken, and on one such occasion it is not until he is forced to listen- and offered information he can use for revenge- that he considers working with another racer he had not partnered with before.
Diego is a very resourceful person, using the things (and even people) around him to his advantage. Within the race proper he does not cheat- this would be against his proud nature- but when he is in a fight or when there are no rules to govern him, he will use underhanded tactics to achieve his goal. An example presented by the narration is his marriage to a wealthy elderly woman, who died six months after. Speculation proposes that poison was involved, but it is clear that whether he did or did not murder her, he became involved primarily to acquire a tidy fortune within a short time.
Thanks in part to how his mother raised him, Diego has a large sense of pride. She taught him that even when they had nothing they should keep their pride, and he clearly lives by those words. It shows not only in his lack of cheating (despite many chances to do so- particularly after acquiring his stand), but also in his unwillingness to bend knee to even men of higher standing. Diego fully considers himself to be on equal standing at the least, and will not display otherwise.
To this point he tends to be overconfident, with his self-certainty becoming a bit of a limitation. He is so convinced that he knows what he needs to know, and is so right in what he is doing, that he does not stop to make sure that he is, in fact, right. He is not one to take criticism well, and can get short with people who contest his certainty.
Diego is not someone who allows himself to get too close to, or involved, with most people. He does not allow many near and of those that he does, he still keeps a reserved difference to them. People he works with are seen as useful tools more than companions, and while he does work well with them, there is clearly no strong emotional attachment. This isn't to say he is incapable of empathy, as he shows a great deal of it as a child. Rather, he has grown callous over time, and chooses to keep people at a distance to save the energy he would otherwise spend on such empathy for driving his own goals.
After the life he has lived, Diego has become rather misanthropic to this end- finding humankind as a whole to be less than they tout themselves to be, even going so far as to compare them to a flock of pigeons. He sees little value in humanity itself, and his greatest desire from it is to see people show him the respect and diffidence he feels he is owed. Otherwise, he is generally disinclined to associate with people as a whole.
Someone who manages to find their way beyond his hardened nature however, would find someone who cares deeply indeed. In contrast to his attitudes toward other people, he is shown to be quite caring toward his horse, ensuring she makes it through a leg of the race wherein she is injured, and even offering his services to another in order to obtain care for her. As a whole, Diego is a man who has dealt with a very negative experience with people over all, and in an understandable measure has become disillusioned with the idea of inherent kindness from others. He has closed himself off from people, choosing not to care about others or expect them to care about him, possibly to protect himself from experiencing disappointment in that again. Beneath this however is a person who wants to be valued- perhaps more-so to offset the devaluation he experienced in the past- and is willing to go to rather large extremes to reach his goal.
